IceCam
- An integrated database system for near real –time monitoring of sea
ice
Fact sheet -ICECAM
Recently the IceCam
has been used by R/V Lance. In addition to data collected by the IceCam,
video data was collected from the
helicopter.
While there were resources to dedicate three flights to sea ice observations,
most of the data was collected by scientists doing research on polar bears.
This data was also used to supply met.no with near real-time information
on the sea ice conditions in Storfjorden.

What
is does:
Synchronises all observation parameters into one database:
- Image
- Latitude and longitude
- Time stamp
- Pitch and roll
- Meteorological readings
Advantages:
- Minimises subjectivity
of human observations
- Maximises human
resources
- Any Ship-of-opportunity
can be used as a platform:
- fishing
- cruise ships
- transport
and re-supply ships
- scientific
expeditions

Sea ice concentration:
Threshold algorithm is applied to an area of image from which ice concentration
is calculated.
The illustrated a.o.i is chosen to
avoid image foreshortening.
Geo/rectification:
Pitch and roll data allow the images to be geo-rectified, allowing floe
size to be calculated.

 |
Plan:
Up to 5 systems to be deployed on ships operating in the waters around
Svalbard during the 2004-05 season
Each day, the sea ice concentration will be calculated. A text file,
containing the results along with the observation time and geographical
location. |
